K to 12 for Globally Competent Pinoys

K to 12 for Globally Competent Pinoys
By Janella de Leon

The first batch of graduates of the Senior High school under the K to 12 program held their commencement exercises this year. This was finally only after its implementation 2 years ago. The K to 12 program requires 13 years of education which is from Kindergarten to Grade 12, hence the name ‘K to 12.’

Thankfully, the Philippine Government approved the new educational system to be effective nationwide. It’s only appropriate because it has been in fact overdue. Although we accept that our country belongs to the third world countries all over the world, it’s shocking to know that the Philippines is the LAST country in Asia and one of the only three countries worldwide along with Angola and Djibouti who still follow the 10-year pre-university program. It’s about time that we keep up with the standard and the quality of education the rest of the world has.

The K to 12 program aims to provide specific specialized tracks to train the students based on the profession they are aiming for. According to my sister, who is currently in Grade 10, she approves of the K to 12 curriculum because it allows the students to focus on the track they will specialize in. Also, the students could decide if they plan to continue with a College degree or work after graduating.

I was privileged to have witnessed the first batch of Senior High school graduates from our school, the New Era University. I’m honored to have been trusted to host INCTV’s youth show, AveNEU, which was tasked to cover the event. I  was able to know the facts behind the program and how the New Era University was one of the first schools accredited by the Department of Education to implement the K to 12 program. So far, there are more than 2,199 private schools that are cleared to offer Senior High school.

Last April 24, the New Era University held its first commencement exercises for Senior High school. The ceremony was housed in the Philippine Arena, and all the Senior High graduates from the branches of Lipa, Pampanga and Quezon City were there. I was even surprised to know that the number of graduates was 2,195. Together with the opportunity to host the show, I was given the chance to interview the keynote speaker Dr. Glicerio Santos III, the Assistant Medical Director of the New Era General hospital, who gave a very remarkable speech for the students and the parents. I asked him what was his reaction towards the first batch of graduates and he was indeed positive about it. He proudly says that this is a very historical event for the New Era University for this will improve the quality of education and be globally competent for the younger generation, who will eventually become professionals. Of course, the school has prepared for it before its implementation, making it an accredited school for the program.

“Tunay na napaka historical ng araw na ito. Sa pagkat ngayon, makikita nating magtatapos ang kauna-unahang mga graduates ng K to 12, para ng sa ganoon, maitaas ang kalidad at maipantay sa lahat ng pamantayan sa buong mundo,” Dr. Glicerio Santos III says.

We also interviewed students and they were all excited about graduating and becoming official College students. I was also able to interview the Valedictorian of the New Era University branch in Pampanga, Ella Cristina Mujar, together with her proud parents. She tells us how happy she is to graduate as Valedictorian after all her hard work, and how she’s looking forward to continuing her studies in College. In line with her chosen track, she will continue taking up Accountancy to achieve her dream of becoming a Certified Public Accountant.

Parents also shared positive feedback towards the graduation and the K to 12 program itself. They were also happy with how the school has performed and influenced their children. They even consider staying loyal to the university by sending their children there for College. Besides being a trusted school under the K to 12 program, but especially with the discipline imposed by the school supported by Christian values. I have witnessed how proud the parents and the students were through out the event, and it definitely shows how great the school did in honing our future professionals, with the help of the K to 12 program.

Now, we can be more globally competitive more than  ever. The Filipinos will now be of equal standard, credible and effective wherever country we wish to pursue our dreams in.
